Introducing Active Minds

We are absolutely delighted to announce that Active Minds has been shortlisted as a finalist for the Challenge Dementia Prize.

The prize, run by Essex County Council, aims to find ambitious and innovative products, technologies and services, which enable people living with dementia to remain connected to the people and places around them. There was a particular emphasis that the entries focus on solutions that not only work now but will impact future generations, incorporating technology as part of the everyday living.

We applied to the Challenge Dementia Prize because we are passionate about the role we feel digital can play enhancing those living with dementia and their carers. We feel no app currently brings together a holistic view of the family/carer experience into an informative, creative and design-led solution, and we want to be involved in changing this.

Active Minds entered ‘Happy at Home’, which the judging panel selected as one of the finalists, deciding that it was an idea that has the potential to change the lives of people living with dementia.

Our idea is to create an innovative support tool to help with the broader challenges and experiences of families. ‘Happy at Home’ will be a purpose-built digital app which supports families with the challenges they will face caring for their loved one. Through training, expert advice and a localised social network, the app will up-skill families, as well as helping them to plan, cope with and overcome the challenges they face. Additionally, up-skilling, in everything from engagement to environment, has the capability to relieve pressures on the NHS and Social Care, helping families to better cope with the journey. Our longer-term vision is to scale beyond Essex and launch nationally.

As a finalist, Active Minds have been given a micro-grant, as well as ongoing support from Essex County Council’s partner organisations, to help develop, test and evaluate the idea further. We are very impressed and excited by the partners that have been offered to us to strengthen our idea from the fields of digital, innovation, dementia and evaluation. We’re eager to get their thoughts, expertise and critical thinking.

But, in order to make this app the best it can possibly be, we need your help!

We propose to work with families in Essex affected by dementia to understand the knowledge gaps and day-to-day challenges they face. If you, or someone you know, lives in Essex, is a carer to someone with dementia, and would like to be involved in this project please contact us on We would love to work with you to make this app truly innovative and life-changing and put forward the best possible project to the judging panel.

After this process is complete, the overall winner will be announced in November 2018 and will be given £100,000 to make their idea a reality.
